As we travel on a budget of $3 per day or less, checking into a hotel every night isn't an option for us. Luckily we have a very nice and comfy Eureka! tent, not the most compact but it has met our needs so far. Having the tent gives us the possibility to play house where ever we end up at the end of the day.
Since October 7th, 2012 we have paid for accomidation two times, in hotels when we were stuck in cities at night. Since paying for these beds we have met many touring cyclist who, when in the same pinch just ask if they can stay for free at the hotel. We will try this next time.
It's seems a little sketchy at first, the whole stealth-camping thing, but after over 365 wild or stealth camping sites we have NEVER had a problem. To avoid trouble of any kind we stick to the following rules:

It's seems a little sketchy at first, the whole stealth-camping thing, but after over 365 wild or stealth camping sites we have NEVER had a problem. To avoid trouble of any kind we stick to the following rules:
- we don't go onto properties with posted 'no trespassing' signs
- we don't go onto properties that are fenced off
- we don't go onto properties that are being 'maintained' (when there are obvious traces that the property is being taken care of like mowed grass or beaten foot trails)
- we pitch our tent between sunset and dusk and break up camp by sunrise
- we leave no mess and clean up what we can like taking out garbage or cutting grass
- we try not to be seen entering and try to avoid visibility from the road
- We ask the locals what they think. Their input has always proved valuable
Most other times we end up on couches, beds or floors of generous people everywhere. Often through Warmshowers.org but just as much at random places and times by a variety of people. We found out that people in general are friendly, so if you are in a pinch ask somebody for help.
